Benefits of Reflective LCD Signage For Retail Businesses

In order to drive sales, businesses must compete with one another to lure consumers into their stores. Large printed banners with unique, visually pleasing graphics and promotions are often put up in the windows or outside the storefront to capture buyers’ attention. But these must be replaced frequently – even daily - as trends, seasons, and promotions change. This can prove to be both a tremendous cost and a tedious job for businesses.


Many businesses are moving towards digital advertising screens because they offer several key advantages over printed advertising. First, digital signage gives businesses the ability to update their advertising graphics in real-time with the click of a button. This saves an incredible amount of time compared to changing out printed banners. Cost is another factor. While printed banners are relatively low in individual cost, they need to be changed frequently and that can really adds up over the weeks, months and especially years. With digital retail signage, businesses can maximize their advertising space by rotating multiple promotions, announcements and other information on a single screen without having to print anything. Third, and maybe most indicative, consumers are far more likely to notice changing or moving than static graphics. Retail digital displays can feature video clips as well as changing content, making them an attractive investment for businesses that want a leg up over their competitors.

While in-store digital signage is affordable and readily available, outdoor digital signage can be too cost-prohibitive for many businesses to consider. This is a shame, as storefronts and windows are arguably the most critical advertising areas for a retail business. Outdoor digital signage has a higher initial price point because it must be ruggedized to withstand extreme temperatures, moisture, wind and even impact. Specialized materials including heating and/or cooling mechanisms must be built into the displays for them to be operable in extreme temperature ranges. Sealed enclosures made from impact-resistant materials must also be added to protect delicate electrical components from moisture, wind and impact. Each of these enhancements increase the cost, however, also are shown to increase the conversion rates of passers-by into buying customers.

Another obstacle for outdoor displays is sunlight. Many businesses’ storefronts face the sun during most of the daytime. Have you ever noticed how your phone goes dark when you are trying to use it in direct sunlight? That’s because the backlight is not strong enough to counter the sun’s intense rays. With our phones, we can simply walk into a shaded area or shield the phone with our hand to view it more easily, but digital signage isn’t always as easily mobile. To achieve sunlight readability, many outdoor display manufacturers build high-brightness backlights into their displays. This creates acceptable sunlight readable display, but there is a major tradeoff: High-brightness backlights use a lot of electricity. This makes them costly to operate over time and not environmentally conscious, which can quickly outweigh the benefit of using such technology in the first place.

Instead of a backlight, a mirrored layer is built into the display behind the liquid crystal layer.
